“In the depths, a flicker…a speck of light finds my eyes. The only hope I have left with the light shining dimly above me. My air is stolen from me, my body sinking faster. The sides of my vision blur fading to black. Memories of my baby girl flashing back at me. My husband yelling and screaming at me. Our daughter in the backseat, screaming as the road grew rougher. Our screams echoing through the car as we hit the water with a bang. Glass shatters, inviting the incoming water. We’re flooded, completely underwater now. My daughter yells as best she can, bubbles erupting from her mouth. I shake my head and place my mouth over mine to tell her to preserve her air. She understands and does the same. I get her out of her seat belt and pull her out of the car, she kicks furiously. I look up at her as I watch her kick her tiny feet to safety. It’s getting harder to breathe now, but at least she’s safe. My husband’s arm shoots past me and grabs her foot, pulling her down. One hand on her foot, the other on his blade. My eyes shoot open. No, I have done everything I can to keep her safe, I am not letting him kill her. I kick and thrash, hitting him as best I can to distract him. He turns to me, his eyes black with rage and murder, he whipes and brings the blade down on me, slicing my chest, my eyes blur, my vision going in and out. My blood fills the water surrounding with a crimson color. Everything fades to black. The last thing I see is my daughter kicking my husband and swimming to the surface. A light smile adorns my face. She’s safe.
